Theatre Antique d'Orange

The Théâtre antique d'Orange ("Ancient Theatre of Orange") is an ancient Roman theatre, in Orange, southern France, built early in the 1st century CE. It is owned by the municipality of Orange and is the home of the summer opera festival, the Chorégies d'Orange. It is one of the best preserved of all the Roman theatres in the Roman colony of Arausio (or, more specifically, Colonia Julia Firma Secundanorum Arausio: "the Julian colony of Arausio established by the soldiers of the second legion") which was founded in 40 BC. Playing a major role in the life of the citizens, who spent a large part of their free time there, the theatre was seen by the Roman authorities not only as a means of spreading Roman culture to the colonies, but also as a way of distracting them from all political activities. Mime, pantomime, poetry readings and the "attelana" (a kind of farce rather like the commedia dell'arte) was the dominant form of entertainment, much of which lasted all day. For the common people, who were fond of spectacular effects, magnificent stage sets became very important, as was the use of stage machinery. The entertainment offered was open to all and free of charge.

Castello Fénis

The castle is located in the town of Fénis in Aosta Valley region, at about 13 km from the city of Aosta. The keep has a pentagonal layout, with towers at the corners. It is surrounded by a double boundary wall with battlements and by a series of watchtowers linked by a walkway. Detail of a fresco of a Wise Man. Walls of the courtyard's balconies.Despite his impressive defensive structure, the castle is situated at the top of a small knoll and not of a promontory or another inaccessible and easily defensible place. In fact it was not built for military purposes, but to serve as a prestigious residence for the Challant family. The inner courtyard, at the centre of the keep, shows a semi-circular stone staircase and wood balconies. At the top of the staicase a 15th century fresco features Saint George killing the dragon, while the walls of the balconies are decorated with images of sages and prophets and proverbs in ancient French. The frescoes are attributed to a painter from the school of Jaquerio.

Castello di Issogne

Issogne Castle is a castle in Issogne in the Aosta region of northwestern Italy. It is one of the most famous manors of the Val d'Aosta and is located on the right bank of the Dora Baltea at the centre of the inhabited area of Issogne. As a seigniorial residence of the Renaissance, the Castle has quite a different look from that of the austere Castle of Verrès, which is located on the opposite bank of the river.
Issogne Castle is most noteworthy for its fountain in the form of pomegranate tree and its highly decorated portico, a rare example of medieval Alpine painting, with its frescoed cycle of scenes of daily life from the late Middle Ages.

Teatro Romano

This theatre was built in the Augustinian period and once occupied a quarter of the standard urban plan of the Roman colony. The southern façade, built of the local stone, puddinga, is still standing. Originally, it had a stage 45 metres long and 7 metres deep and room for 4,000 spectators. The theatre measures 22 metres high and has arcades with 3 levels of windows. In Roman times an arcade linked the theatre to the amphitheatre. Today this is incorporated into a wall of a 13th Century convent, but retains the curvilinear structure and eight of the 60 original arcades.

Château Tourbillon

The Tourbillon castle (Château de Tourbillon) is a castle in Sion in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is situated on a hill and faces the Basilique de Valère, located on the opposite hill. The castle is currently in a state of ruins following a fire in 1788. Tourbillon castle was built in at the end of the 13th century, sometime between 1290 and 1308, by the bishop Boniface de Challant. A large part of the castle was first destroyed by the Patriots of the Valais in 1416. The castle was then rebuilt in 1477 by Gullaume VI of Raron, wanting to build a chapel and an exterior wall built with battlements. However, in 1788, a gigantic fire reduced the castle to ashes; this became its ruin.

Gletscherschlucht

Starting at the Restaurant Gletscherschlucht, elevated trails and bridges lead along the 100m deep into the socalled Gletscherschlucht. Gletscherschlucht means literally translated glacier gorge, not exactly a name, more a description. The water from the glaciers formed this narrow gorge. At the entrance to the gorge is the Kristallmuseum (crystal museum), which exhibits typical minerals of the Bernese Alps. This place has a certain fame because of the glacier behind the gorge. The glacier is rapidly melting, a fact which is interpreted as a circumstantial evidence for the global warming. A strange thing is the formation of a so called Gletschersee on top of the lower glacier. The lake is formed by melting water collecting in a depression on top of the ice. It has no drainage, but as soon as the water finds a way through a crack, the crack is very fast widened by the flowing water and the water flows in a great flood through the channel at the bottom of the glacier, down the Gletscherschlucht to Grindelwald. This flood could potentially destoy anything in its way and the lake is becoming bigger and bigger every year. To avoid this danger, the city of Grindelwald constructed a tunnel which is intended to drain melting water during the spring and hence impede the formation of a lake.

Völklinger Hütte

A visit to the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is an adventure: the visitor can go down deep into the dark corridors of the burden shed and climb up to the lofty heights of the blast furnace viewing-platform. The multi-media introduction to the sintering-plant takes the visitor on a journey through time, from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks right up to the present day. From the roof of the ore shed, a view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active works of Saarstahl AG. An impressive panorama at any time of year, both by night and by day.At the granulating-plant, the laid out picnic area, located between colourful aquatic plants and uncompromising steel offers visitors a chance to relax. Then there is the ascent to the top platform 27 metres above ground: where the raw materials were once tipped into the blast furnaces. If anyone feels like going up a little further, they can climb up to the viewing-platform of the blast furnace group from which an incomparable panorama can be seen. The top platform, spanning a length of 200 metres is now open to visitors: altogether an impressive experience. The tour continues by walking via the coal track, with its new 20 metre long spiral chute, over the blower shed footbridge into the blower shed. Here the blowers can be seen: giants of iron and steel which generated the blast that was then channelled into the blast furnaces.A tour of the World Cultural Heritage Site, with more than 5000 metres of exciting and well signposted walkways will generally take between two and three hours. The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks: one of the most exciting places in the world.

Château de Bouillon

Château de Bouillon is a medieval castle in the town of Bouillon in the province of Luxembourg, Belgium. Although it was mentioned first in 988, there has been a castle on the same site for a much longer time. The castle is situated on a rocky spur of land within a sharp bend of the Semois River. In 1082, Bouillon Castle was inherited by Godfrey of Bouillon, who sold it to Otbert, Bishop of Liège in order to finance the First Crusade. The castle was later fitted for heavy artillery by Vauban, Louis XIV's military architect in the late 17th century.
