Emmentaler schaukäserei

Watch Emmental cheese being made into 95kg wheels and taste it at the Emmentaler Schaukäserei in Affoltern. Short videos explain the modern production process and how Emmental gets its famous holes, while cheese-making as it was done in the 18th century happens once a day over an open fire in the 18th-century herdsman’s cottage. The dairy processes 6 million litres of milk a year, brought each morning at 6am or 7am by farmers in the surrounding area. In summer try your hand at cheese rolling – yes, just that.

Bärengraben

The Bärengraben, or Bear Pit, is a well-known tourist attraction, an enclosure housing bears at the eastern edge of the Old City of Bern, next to the Nydeggbrücke and the Aare River. The bear is a symbol of Bern, both the city and canton, and is featured in Bern's coat of arms.

The first records of the bears existing in the city come from 1441. This particular site is the fourth such enclosure and was first opened in 1857. In 1925, a smaller pit was added to raise the young bear cubs. Today, the Bärengraben is part of the city zoo (Dählhölzli) and a heritage site of national significance.

The Bear Pit in BernCurrently, the historical Bärengraben is empty. Its last two bears were put down in 2008 and 2009 due to old age and ill health. As a replacement, the nearby BärenPark (bear park), an open-air park next to the Aare river has been opened in October 2009.

Völklinger Hütte

A visit to the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks is an adventure: the visitor can go down deep into the dark corridors of the burden shed and climb up to the lofty heights of the blast furnace viewing-platform. The multi-media introduction to the sintering-plant takes the visitor on a journey through time, from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks right up to the present day. From the roof of the ore shed, a view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active works of Saarstahl AG. An impressive panorama at any time of year, both by night and by day.At the granulating-plant, the laid out picnic area, located between colourful aquatic plants and uncompromising steel offers visitors a chance to relax. Then there is the ascent to the top platform 27 metres above ground: where the raw materials were once tipped into the blast furnaces. If anyone feels like going up a little further, they can climb up to the viewing-platform of the blast furnace group from which an incomparable panorama can be seen. The top platform, spanning a length of 200 metres is now open to visitors: altogether an impressive experience. The tour continues by walking via the coal track, with its new 20 metre long spiral chute, over the blower shed footbridge into the blower shed. Here the blowers can be seen: giants of iron and steel which generated the blast that was then channelled into the blast furnaces.A tour of the World Cultural Heritage Site, with more than 5000 metres of exciting and well signposted walkways will generally take between two and three hours. The World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks: one of the most exciting places in the world.
