Alternatively, head due south up into the alpine valley of the Gave de Gaube, with picturesque Lac de Gaube (1725m) backed by the snowy north face of Vignemale (3298m). There's even a combined télécabine/télésiège (June– Sept; €6.70 return) to spare you most of the ascent from Pont d'Espagne. Beyond the lake, the path continues to the Refuge Oulettes-de-Gaube at the base of Vignemale (06.64.45.41.46 or 05.62.92.62.97; 2151m; 120 places; open May– Oct 15; 3hr from Pont d'Espagne), from where you can return to La Raillère via one of two routes.
