Take a right onto rue Colonel Feracci off rue Scoliscia just after pl. Gaffory. From rue Feracci, take the 1st left onto rue St-Joseph. When the road forks, go straight onto chemin de Baliri and follow the signs toward the gorges or follow allée du 9 Septembre away fromthe train station, cross a bridge, and make a left at the fork in the road at the entrance to the haute-ville. The trail is marked in orange (1hr.).
Less rugged and more easily accessible by foot than Restonica—though equally demanding at certain points—the Tavignano (tahv-een-yahnn-oh) gorges are filled with waterfalls, natural pools, and picturesque hiking trails. With no road access, they are likely to be less crowded than their better-known counterpart. The first 2½hr. of hiking along the Tavignano River lead to the Passerelle du Russulinu (902m), a wood bridge surrounded by natural swimming pools and flat, picnic-friendly rocks. Bring sunscreen and wear a hat; there is little shade. Bug repellent is also a good idea, as the valley’s many small pools are perfect breeding grounds for pests. Furthermore, if the orange markers seem to disappear at any point on this trail, retracing your steps might be in order; there are several smaller trails that run parallel—though closer to the river—that lead to dead ends. Another 3hr. along the same trail lead to the Refuge de la Sega (1166m), where hikers can spend the night. (☎ 04 95 46 07 90 or 06 10 71 77 26. Reservations strongly recommended.) On the left, where the road diverges, are ancient bergeries (sheep pens) and huts where transient shepherds used to stay on their way to Plateau d’Alzo; those based in Corte will need to turn back at this point, as further hiking will necessitate an overnight stay.
